About Ian Langohr

Born in 1984, Ian Langohr was raised in the Niagara region of Ontario. He began attending the Ontario College of Art and Design in 2003 and graduated with a BFA in 2008. His years at OCAD were spent focused on developing skills in metal and wood fabrication, creating object based works that involved motion and sound. After graduating Ian began to carve masks and learn costume design in Toronto. He now lives and works in Montreal, pursuing his interests in both visual and musical arts.

Ian’s current practice involves techniques of costume design, where he fabricates elaborate masks involving surrealistic imagery. The masks produce a narrative upon investigation of both their bodily and animal components. Ian’s masks tell stories that contrast themes of melancholy and anxiety with that of absurdity and humour. Conflicts are presented within the masks through the manipulation of scale. These are meant to be allegorical, often reflecting issues of domesticity and personal identity.
